Being Sexy and Trendy in Hijab

Assalamualaikum and good morning to all dear friends and readers.

I was reading a local magazine about the current fashion trend among the local Muslimah which is the Sexy Hijabi Fashion. Here's the cover of the said magazine.

These days there are more covered Muslimah compared to 10 years ago. Alhamdulillah. It means that Islamic teaching especially about covering ourselves has been widely accepted by the Malaysian Muslimahs. This development also has attracted the fashion designers worldwide to create more fashion for Muslim women which they called Muslimah Fashion.

Of course there are designs which I think really Islamic and follow the Islamic dress code. However there are too many creations or clothes that said to be 'Muslimah Fashion' but sadly not Islamic at all. They can varies from tudungs, dresses, pants, skirts, baju kurungs, jubahs and so on. They will make you look sexy when you wear them.

Figure hugging or tight fitting blouse, matched with a lycra instant tudung and complete the assemble with a skinny pants or skinny jeans - you can see that every where in Malaysia. Do not bluff me by saying that your aurah is covered. No... No... No. You are only wrapping yourselves with clothes not covering it.

Look at this cartoon spread inside the same magazine,

Don't you think you've seen this kind of fashion out there? Use our mind and reflect. Yes, we've seen this kind of fashion in many places. Sometimes people wear leotard or tights and top it off with a knee-length dress and a tudung. Please dear Muslimah, let's cover our aurah  P R O P E R L Y.

There's no point wearing clothes like this. It's a waste of money, a waste of time and the biggest waste is your DIGNITY. Everyone can see how small, how big, how thin, how slim, how fat, how tight and all the how that you can think off when speaking on human body.

Let's get back to the right teaching about our dress code. We can wear ANYTHING, as long as it does not show our body shape, does not show our skin and does not show our personal adornment in front and at the back (breasts, hips, bottoms, thigh - you know them.)

Before I forget, do not wear jubah with cutting. Please... the cutting's purpose is to shape your body. That jubah would not help in covering our aurah but helping to disclose our figure to others. Wear something loose without cuttings. Save our body from searching eyes insyaallah we will also save our iman.

A reminder for all of us, women of Islam.

I agree, the same goes for Christian women. If they only knew what men perceive them as when they walk around like that, they do not respect these women they think they are easy and boring because they leave nothing to the imagination. And to think I used to dress like you describe, now I hurt for them, because there are none so blind as those who will not see.

Salam kak Chik,

This is common problems of our muslimah nowadays..In fact what would you react if some of them even said. "My husband like it when I wear like that?" My jaw drops and what more could I say.

Herm..irin ade sedikit cadangan.

Barbie Jones, thanks for sharing that with us my friend. Personally, I think men world wide thought women who wear skimply clothes are easy but they still like to play with them. And yes, no respect for that kind of women. Even non-practicing Muslim men want a wife who are covered properly. I hope sisters who wear revealing clothes will change for the better soon.

i have came across that kind of statement before and I smilingly said, "is your husband Allah?".

it sounds a bit harsh but sometimes we need to remind others that everything that we do, make sure Allah will like it.

Allahu'alam.

Salams Kak Chik.

This is a predicament. We can just do our best to talk to them, and pray that one day they will adorn proper clothes that cover their aurah. FYI, I still love my baju kurung. :D

Unknown said...

Wkslm Hajar.

It's our dakwah challenge Hajar. If everyone is good mannered, then when are we going to practice being a dae'i? And I think baju kurung is ok, covers properly unless the material is sheer, clingy and fits to the body. I know you my dear.

Dear Kakchik, this is a great article. I have seen more of this phenomenon among "younger" muslimahs, as opposed to those who have worn the hijab for a longer time. May be for some it's a process, but for other,s the intention was never there to cover for the right reason. I think while fashion blogs help sisters get creative ideas on how to dress modestly in public, they can also insipire some muslimahs to start caring more about how they look as opposed to how they carry themselves in hijab. A muslimah should look in the mirror to chek if she is covered properly and many of us look to see if we look 'good' enough. I am not saying we shouldn't look presentable, sure we should be
'good looking' but first we have to make sure we meet the requirements of proper hijab! And looking like that cartoon is not proper hijab!

Gail said...

I agree with Nida.
Wearing hijab with hipster pants and a tight shirt defeats the purpose of the Hijab.

Unknown said...

Dear nida, thank you. You are right about everything. The sad thing is this type of style is not only influencing younger muslimah but also older ones that have been wearing hijab for a longer time. I don't know what has happened to Muslimah in Malaysia these days. Only a small percent but they grab attention too much. I hope by writing this kind of article our muslimah would be reminded about our true purpose of hijab as much as I want to remind myself.

Unknown said...

Absolutely correct Gail. I keep shaking my head whenever I see girls dressing like that.
